This 15-day mountaineering course takes place in the Chugach Mountains of Alaska and focuses on the art of wilderness summits, glacier travel and working in a high functioning team. The terrain in Alaska is demanding and students must be physically fit and ready to embrace challenge.
After meeting your group at the airport in Anchorage, you will travel together to the Chugach Mountains just north of Seward. This course emphasizes teaching glaciated mountain travel and summit attempts. Ropes are often required to protect you and your team on your journey. During the course, you can expect to travel on and off trail, over steep terrain, across crevassed glaciers and through thick brush.
As the course progresses and your skills and experience increase, your instructors will turn more and more responsibility over to you and your crew. You will eventually take over decision-making on navigation, route finding, distance to be covered, sharing of duties, campsite setup/cleanup, and meal selection. This is your opportunity to make the course your own unique experience - determining solutions for each day's challenges, setting a pace that is appropriate for your crew, becoming each other's friends and confidantes, and having the time of your life.
Chugach, Alaska – This is the land of the midnight sun, where days are long and sunsets last hours. The Chugach Range sweeps along the Alaskan coast south of Anchorage in a stunning arc of tectonic upheaval. Everywhere in this range are the telltale signs: whether it’s ice and snow high on a pass, or a U-shaped valley full of loose, gravel till and drained by a braided stream, it’s obvious that this is glacier country. Thick brush and trees fill the lower valleys, clouds hover over everything, and the mist and rain often last days on end. Those who brave the rugged environment will be rewarded with pristine wilderness, world class views and, if you’re lucky, sightings of moose or bears.
