  • Appalachian Backpacking Trip

Backpack and climb through some of the oldest mountains in the world and see where North Carolina Outward Bound School began! This journey will take you deep into Western North Carolina, home to hundreds of waterfalls, over a million acres of national forest, park and public land, roaring rivers and the highest peaks in the Eastern United States.

Course Description

While exploring the Pisgah and Nantahala National Forests, its beautiful mountain laurel and rhododendron, cool mountain streams and unique rock formations, you will acquire many long-lasting life and technical skills. “Education for life.”

This rock climbing focused course teaches participants to tie knots, belay, and read rock faces for climbs. These skills will then be put to the test over several days of progressive climbs. Participants will also develop teamwork, leadership and confidence while working together with their group to meet daily expeditioning goals, set-up camp, navigate and cooking excellent backcountry meals.

In addition to being put to the test physically, participants will build communication and leadership skills, confidence, initiative and teamwork that will leave them with a newfound strength that can easily be applied to everyday obstacles.

Course Area

The Southern Appalachians, which includes the Blue Ridge Mountains, are some of the oldest mountains in the world. The range is mostly located in the Unites States, but extends into southeastern Canada too. The birthplace of North Carolina Outward Bound School is in the Southern Appalachians of North Carolina where the highest mountains of the range reside, the highest being Mount Mitchell at 6,684 feet (2,037 m). These mountain’s rocky craggs and granite outcroppings provide exceptional climbing opportunities.
