This is a backcountry trekking, mountain climbing and service based course in the Andes of Ecuador.
This course begins in the countryside of Ecuador, outside of Quito, for a day of acclimatization and service. You will spend a day giving your work to the community while learning about the culture that surrounds you and practicing your Spanish.
After service, you will head into the high country of the Andes. Here you will learn about backcountry expedition techniques including leadership skills, teamwork, navigation, and backcountry living skills. The glaciers will be your classroom as you learn how to travel safely in crevassed terrain. You and your new team will backpack and attempt a peak while beginning to learn about each other, as well as yourselves. Each night you will get more and more familiar with your new, backcountry lifestyle. Your group may have the opportunity to climb high onto a glacier and make camp in the snow.
The trip will culminate in a peak attempt, well above 14,000’. After a final trek through a remote cloud forest you will have a chance to finish your course in natural hot springs while looking up at the mountains you have come to know so well.
