12-day service based training expeditions for youth ages 14-16 that combine Outward Bound's renowned leadership training with a focus on environmental stewardship. This wilderness based backpacking expedition provides students with hands-on conservation and environmental service opportunities in Pennsylvania's beautiful state parks and forests.
Crew members will engage in a challenging backpacking expedition with service projects and trainings incorporated into the adventure. Training and service opportunities may include: Leave no Trace, Wilderness First Aid, remote trail maintenance, invasive species removal, study of native plantings, forestry skills, etc. All trainings and service components will be facilitated within Outward Bound's Educational Framework.
You do not need to have previous backpacking or climbing experience to successfully complete this Outward Bound course. We will teach you skills for wilderness travel—how to pack appropriately, hike as a group, set up tarps and navigate. Your course will begin the moment you arrive at our Outward Bound base and will continue through your expedition on the trails in the Appalachian Mountains. The mountain trails are where the real magic takes place.
Students will work side by side with staff from Pennsylvania's Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, State Parks and Forests and Park Rangers during service projects with the intent to educate you about the natural environment while also exposing you to “green careers” in the natural world. On the group's return to Philadelphia Ð prior to the conclusion of the course Ð students will have an opportunity to meet with leaders in Philadelphia's Department of Parks and Recreation and the Mayor of the City of Philadelphia, pending schedule availability.
Time allotted for reflection in close proximity to your group's base camp takes place as a 24 hour “solo.” Outward Bound's signature “solo” experience is what makes these expeditions so unique. Food, water, shelter and periodic instructor check-ins are provided (instructors are within sight and sound of the group members at all times).
This course is designed to build the next generation of leaders with a concern for the environment. In order to meet state high school graduation requirements of service activities, each participant completing the course will be presented with a certificate of accomplishment listing the number of service hours provided (15 hours minimum).
