Dark Canyon Wilderness Area — One of the premier canyon destinations of Southeastern Utah, the Dark Canyon Wilderness Area hosts a clear flowing stream in the bottom of a 2,000’ deep canyon, with unbelievable scenery, challenging terrain, and a rich human history. Dark Canyon is a truly wild place with rock that has been eroded into an endless variety of mesas, towers, grottos, waterfalls, and canyons offering a unique experience to those who explore it.
Course Description
Canyon Backpacking – Once you set off, you will engage in canyon route finding, minimum-impact camping and traveling skills, outdoor cooking, basic first aid, and navigation. Each day of the course is balanced with a good mix of backpacking, day hiking, exploration, time to sit and reflect, and fulfilling the daily needs of the group such as cooking, packing up or unpacking, putting up shelters and getting water. You will learn to work together to ascend and descend difficult routes through the canyons and to reach stunning viewpoints. Throughout the course, you will be able to learn and reflect in a landscape of canyons, deep within a seemingly ancient world that is dominated by tranquil stillness, a majestic sky, and an encompassing grandeur that is unique to the desert canyons of Utah.
