Wilderness Instructor – AK, WA, OR, CA, UT, CO, MN, ME, WV - Summer 2010
The Instructor position is an entry level instructional role, providing familiarity with OB procedures, policies, and the local course area. The Instructor works under the direct supervision of the Lead Instructor or Course Director and is responsible for supervising, teaching and facilitating students in the field throughout the course.
Responsibilities:
- Participates in required staff training.
- Fully participates in course planning, including development of educational and technical curricula, route planning, food and equipment organization/packing.
- Assists Lead instructor in the delivery of Outward Bound mission, educational framework and required components.
- Has necessary technical skills required to supervise students in required course components.
- May be required to manage a student group and all emergencies in a Lead Instructors absence.
- Is able to locate and use communication systems in the event of an emergency.
- Adheres to all local operating procedures, safety policies and emergency procedures outlined in the staff handbook.
- Is able to provide clear, effective and timely communication with the Lead Instructor, Course Director and other staff.
- Consistently strives to give and receive feedback with co-workers and supervisor.
- Commits to own professional growth as well as improving technical and interpersonal skills.
Certifications Needed:
- Current certifications in WFR and CPR
- Other certifications vary by location
Program Activities:
Each location operates different programs and activities. Below is a list of what occurs where:
- AK - Mountaineering
- CA - Mountain Backpacking
- CO - Mountain Backpacking, Mountaineering
- ME Sea - Sailing
- ME Land - Canoeing, Backpacking
- MN - Canoeing, Backpacking
- UT - Rafting, Backpacking
- OR - Mountaineering, Rafting
- WA - Sea Kayaking, Canoeing, Backpacking, Mountaineering
- All - Rock climbing
Technical Skills Needed:
- Consult the Hiring Skills Checklist to see what specific skills are required to work in which location.
- In Program areas with more than one technical component, ideally staff would have both of the skills sets needed. This is an ideal and not always the case so we encourage you to apply and let our hiring staff help place you appropriately.
Dates:
- Training for new staff occurs in May. Work is usually offered following training (June) through the end of the season (end of Aug/Sept). Some locations (CO, MN, ME) have slightly longer seasons and can sometimes offer staff work into the fall.
- If applicants have strong skills and experience but are not able to make the training dates, please apply! We will do our best to work with your schedule.
