Interns – MN, OR, CO - Summer 2010
The Intern position is a training role. They perform a multitude of student and course support duties to gain an understanding and appreciation of the instructor position.
Responsibilities:
- Participates in staff training.
- Is able to locate and use communication systems in the event of an emergency.
- Develops teaching plans and seeks opportunities to teach when qualified. Works on presenting information clearly and cohesively.
- Is responsible for helping with logistical functions such as food pack out, equipment resupply, gear repair and cleaning.
- Assists with high-risk activities such as rock climbing, and ropes course.
- Drives students to and from course events/transitions
- Performs site tasks as assigned, such as building, and maintenance of program facilities, sites, and equipment.
- Adheres to all local operating procedures, safety policies and emergency procedures outlined in the staff handbook.
- Assists with field evacuations, student supervision and other various program tasks.
- Develops ability to give and receive feedback productively with co-workers and supervisor.
- Is flexible and open to continued learning. Stays actively involved in own professional growth and improving technical and interpersonal skills.
- Is part of maintaining community spaces at local basecamp
- Depending on schedules, interns may have opportunities to “shadow” courses in the field.
- Other duties as assigned.
Skills Needed:
- Field experience in outdoor education programs preferred.
- Holds current certifications required. CPR, First Aid – WFA/WAFA accepted, WFR preferred.
- Ability to work as a team member in a cooperative environment.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Maintains a calm and upbeat attitude, and can manage self and others in stressful situations.
- Is mature and responsible with an ability to work well with peers.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to carry weights up to 50-60 lbs.
- Must be sufficiently fit to participate in all site and course activities and maintain ample energy, strength and focus to aid students and instructors
- On feet most days, sometimes for long hours (e.g. early morning departure to late night return).
Dates of work:
- CO – Two intern sessions. One begins in May and the other in early June. Internships last through the end of August with some opportunities to work into the fall.
- MN – Three intern sessions 1) May – early July with work opportunities to follow. 2) June – early August with opportunities to stay until end of August. 3) July – end of August.
- OR – Will occur between May and August.
