Outward Bound Atlanta - Executive Director
Summary: The Executive Director is responsible for developing and executing the strategy and vision of Outward Bound Atlanta within the philosophy, mission, policies and procedures of the North Carolina Outward Bound School. The Executive Director will provide leadership in the areas of safety, programming, development, and education while working closely with the OBA Advisory Board, NCOBS Executive Director and all staff. The Executive Director will be part of the NCOBS Management Team.Duties and Responsibilities:
The Executive Director is responsible for the leadership, management, program safety and quality, and direction of OBA.
Specific duties include:
- Interpret and execute current and long-range goals, objectives, plans and policies, developed with the OBA Advisory Board and NCOBS’ Executive Director.
- Ensure programming supports the long-range goals and objectives of OBA and NCOBS.
- Manage all OBA program activities and program staff, including the management of the AmeriCorps Director..
- In conjunction with NCOBS safety and curriculum specialists, ensure all programs and operations meet the highest possible standards of quality and safety. Serve as Single Point Accountable (SPA) for safety of all Atlanta based activities
- In conjunction with the Advisory Board and NCOBS’s Executive Director, work aggressively to introduce Outward Bound programming to all metro Atlanta public school districts, as well as independent schools, with the goal of developing ongoing fee for service relationships with a wide variety of clients
- Provide leadership and support in all development activities, maintaining a high profile in the greater Atlanta community.
- Develop and nurture strong relationships with local agencies and community organizations in order to fully support programming, to grow client base, and to further opportunities for organization collaboration.
- In conjunction with Advisory Board, NCOBS’ Executive Director and Development team, be the primary “face to the community” in developing and nurturing funder relationships and making direct asks.
- Actively engage with and be actively involved in the development the Atlanta Advisory Board
- In conjunction with the Advisory Board and NCOBS’ Executive Director, develop an annual operating budget to meet the needs of the organization and manage the organization to the FY Budget
- Ensure the staffing plan meets current OBA needs.
- Support special projects as necessary.
- Work closely with other members of the NCOBS Management Team to support open enrollment and Group Education activities and Outward Bound Professional in the Atlanta market.
- Ensure the soundness of OBA’s financial structure.
- Establish and maintain an effective system of communication throughout the organization.
- Periodically and annually report to OBA Advisory Board and NCOBS Executive Director on progress against goals and objectives as related to budget and strategic plan, including Monthly Executive Director reports.
- Set a tone of mutual respect with other Outward Bound Centers and encourage sharing of ideas and vision.
Qualifications:
The ideal candidate will have 10 plus years of progressive experience in the areas of education, programming and fundraising with a passion for experiential learning, and exposure to Outward Bound principles.
- Track record of successfully executing educational programming ideally in a public school system environment
- In depth understanding of safety issues and safety challenges in both an urban and wilderness setting
- Experience with programming in underserved markets, having a strong ability to demonstrate and communicate clearly the value of the program
- Experience with Outward Bound Programs
- Track record of developing relationships with key funders, including foundations and a strong working knowledge of government grants and funding
- Excellent communication skills with demonstrated experience communicating with a variety of constituents and youth
- Experience in working with non profit boards and matrixed organizations
- Demonstrated experience in financial budgeting and non profit accounting practices
- Knowledge of fundraising strategies and tactics, ideally with a familiarity with the Atlanta market
- Bachelors Degree in Education, Psychology or a related field. Masters degree is a plus.
