Next Training for New Staff!! — January 5-16, 2010 —

We are seeking enthusiastic, energetic, and dynamic outdoor educators and teachers interested in working seasonally or full time with struggling teens and young adults. Responsibilities include teaching life skills and outdoor education on 20 to 30 day wilderness canoe expeditions throughout the Southeast.

We offer seasonal and full time employment with preference given to applicants interested in instructing for one year or more. We have great benefits, opportunities for full-time or seasonal work, flexible work schedules, pro deals, and excellent opportunities for personal and professional growth.

Full-time wilderness instructors typically instruct up to 9 courses over an 18-month period while seasonal staff may instruct anywhere from 1 to 4 courses per/year. Full-time employment available to wilderness instructors can include a 6 or 9 course agreement with a great benefits package and paid travel and training! Lead Instructors start between at $95 - $104 p/day. Assistant Instructors start between $80-$84 p/day.

Outward Bound’s At-Risk Expedition locations serve at-risk and court referred youth ages 13 to 17 and young adults ages 18 to 20. We help teens and their families transition their lives in more meaningful and positive directions. We emphasize character development, academic achievement and social responsibility to reduce the risk of dropping out of school, substance abuse and future delinquency. Many of our students are struggling in their home or school environments.

About New Staff Training

Our New Staff Trainings are designed for experienced and entry level wilderness instructors who have a desire to instruct 20 to 30 day wilderness expeditions with Outward Bound’s At-Risk Youth Expeditions located in the Southeast.

The goal of this training is to orient and train new staff to Outward Bound's at-risk programming and student population so they may begin instructing right away.

We are interested in applicants with a desire for future work with Outward Bound. Applicants with previous field experience or experience working with at-risk populations could begin working for Outward Bound right away. Entry-level or less experienced instructors participate in the Instructor Practicum immediately following the New Staff Training.

Instructor Practicum

After participating in our New Staff Training, we offer additional professional development opportunities through our 9 to 12 week Instructor Practicum. This practicum follows the new staff training and is designed for entry level or less experienced instructors interested in future work with Outward Bound.

The practicum provides "hands on" learning opportunities so new instructors can hone their wilderness and facilitation skills and is designed to help solidify wilderness and facilitation skills. Learning opportunities throughout the practicum can include instructing up to two wilderness courses and/or spending time on base camps learning how courses operate behind the scenes.

Instructors are provided a $125 weekly stipend each week of the practicum, room and board, and reimbursed travel expenses between base camps. Full time employment may be offered anytime throughout the practicum.

College credit may be given as part of a field experience or internship requirement, a tuition fee may apply.
