Eligibility
Youth Applicants: Outward Bound Leadership Scholarships are awarded to high school juniors and seniors (going on to college) and college/university students between the ages of 17 and 23. Youth scholars receive full-tuition awards to attend 22-day mountaineering courses in the United States (see list of available courses below). These courses challenge participants to learn new skills, work as a team, care for the environment and further develop leadership skills. Examples of leadership considered in the application process may include: student government, community service, or other activities where students demonstrate a determination for excellence.Educator Applicants: Educators who demonstrate an active interest in transferring the lessons learned through Outward Bound back to their schools are also eligible for the Outward Bound Leadership Scholarship. Teachers must be at least 23 years-old and returning to teach at the same school from which they applied. Educators may attend any 7-, 10-, or 14-day summer course (see list of available courses below).
Additional Policies: Former Outward Bound scholarship recipients are not eligible. Please note that the Outward Bound Leadership Scholarship covers tuition only. Scholars are responsible for the $100 application fee, $100 transportation fee, personal transportation, and any clothing and boots necessary for the course. Download the Financial Application, fill it out electronically, and submit it with your Outward Bound Leadership Award Application and a copy of your (and/or your parent/guardian(s)) most recent Federal Tax Return(s) (1040 Tax Form and associated Schedules and Forms). If the student is under 21 or not self-supporting, income information from both parents is required.
Step 3: Submit the complete Outward Bound Leadership Scholarship Application prior to the close of business on March 15, 2010. Applications will be accepted prior to the deadline, but they will not be reviewed until March 16, 2010. The Outward Bound Leadership Scholars will be announced and all other applicants will be contacted by April 1, 2010.
A complete application includes:
Outward Bound Leadership Scholarship Application and Essay Questions.
A $100 application fee, which is not processed until you accept your scholarship award.
At least one letter of recommendation from someone who can attest to your leadership qualities, experience and/or potential.
