Marmot, an outdoor product company for over thirty years, and Outward Bound have established a scholarship program for outstanding students with demonstrated leadership potential and financial need. The Marmot Leadership Scholarship is a full-tuition award to attend a 50-day Summer Semester or Wilderness Leader Course. One deserving student is awarded this scholarship each year and is outfitted for the course in Marmot outerwear.
This year's Marmot Scholar is David Nokovic. Originally from Colorado, David recently completed his freshman year at Portland State University. A passionate environmentalist, David is the regional coordinator at his school for the Sierra Student Coalition. This past year he organized 40 Pacific Northwest students to attend a conference in DC to lobby for a nation-wide renewable energy grid. Through the Clinton Global Initiative, David is heading a solar energy project. He is also an avid runner.
David will be chronicling his experiences on the Wilderness Instructor Course, June 25 to August 13, on the Outward Bound website. Click here to read David's journal. David will learn the skills necessary for an entry level job in the field of outdoor education. The course takes place in the North Cascades and the San Juan Islands of Puget Sound of Washington. In addition to building skills in sea kayaking, mountaineering, and rock climbing, David will learn about risk management and group facilitation. The course also includes Wilderness First Responder and Leave No Trace courses.
