The Expedition:

The highest point in Africa, Kilimanjaro, is perhaps one of the best known mountains of the world. It is the easiest of the Seven Summits and definitely the most romantic! Kilimanjaro is like an island, standing tall, not unlike a sentinel surrounded by the hot, dry plains of Africa. It amazes all with its widely contrasting vegetation; from tropical rainforest to high arid moorlands, watched over by towering cliffs and glaciers. Kilimanjaro is actually the highest free-standing mountain in the world.

Climbers and adventurers alike have long been attracted to the highest point in Africa - Uhuru Peak on Kilimanjaro - which can be reached by several easy to moderate routes. The two main summits of Kilimanjaro: craggy Mawenzi, 5149m, and 'flat-topped', Kibo, 5896m are separated by The Saddle, a 5km wide, high-altitude, semi-desert. From the summit glaciers, screes, cliffs, afro-alpine moorland then forests lead down to the cultivated foothills below.

It is located in north-eastern Tanzania, near the border of Kenya. Kilimanjaro is a dormant volcano and although it lies 3° south of the equator, an ice cap covers the crater of Kibo year-round.

Our climb will be by the Machame Route. This route winds around the "skirt" of the mountain, slowly gaining altitude and giving us glimpses of the entire south side of this majestic peak.
