This unique journey is a canoe touring expedition. Many days will be spent on flat water lakes and rivers, traveling through the North Woods. You don’t need to have previous canoeing or climbing experience. When your course begins you will get a basic introduction to backcountry travel, and then you will quickly journey out into the wilderness, where the real magic takes place.

The nature of paddling the lakes of Western Maine and the group interaction with people at a similar place in life are all aspects which make this course special for adults over thirty. Your instructors are highly trained outdoor educators who act as facilitators of your experience. They are not “guides;” Instead they work to give you the knowledge and tools to be an integral member of a self-guided team. They encourage you and challenge you throughout the course to take initiative, push your perceived limits, and be an active and sharing member of your group.
Course Area Your wilderness classroom will take place in western Maine—mostly in the Androscoggin watershed. The Androscoggin is fed by Aziscohos Lake and the Magalloway River, as well as the Rangely Lakes—Cupsuptic, Mooselookmeguntic, and Richardson Lakes. Native Abenaki used to use the Androscoggin as both a means of transportation between winter habitats inland and summer living on the coast and as a source for finding food. Later the Androscoggin River was used to move logs to mills downstate during the logging boom of the nineteenth century. These days the Rangely Lakes are used mainly by recreationalists, fishermen, and scientists.
