Minnesota Canoeing & Backpacking - Youth
This three week course features a backpacking trip along the north shore of Lake Superior, a canoe expedition in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness and rock climbing at Shovel Point on Lake Superior. It is a great way to experience two beautiful environments in the remote and amazing north woods of Minnesota’s border country. This course is ideal for teens looking for challenge and variety.

The Superior Hiking Trail winds its way among birch, cedars and maples, crossing over some of the dozens of coursing waterfalls that dump into Lake Superior. Well marked trails, campsites and moderately challenging terrain make this a perfect way to start your trip, build teamwork and endurance and prepare for the canoe expedition. Shovel Point is an 80-foot sheer rock wall rising straight out of the Lake. It is dramatic and windswept but offers great climbs for the novice climber.

The Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness is a labyrinth of lakes and rock that has been specifically protected as a true American wilderness; no roads, power lines, or motorized craft (with the exception a handful lakes) may enter its borders, so the Boundary Waters has changed little since the glaciers receded 10,000 years ago. Over 1 million acres in size, the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness extends nearly 150 miles along the Canadian border adjacent to Quetico Provincial Park.

Waterfalls, sheer rock cliffs, and deep, crystal-clear lakes abound. Moose, deer, beaver, and otter are just a few of the wildlife you may see or see evidence of while you are there. The Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness contains several thousand portage-linked lakes and streams, interspersed with islands, forests, and crags. It has no piped water, prepared shelters, or signs to point the way. Adventure awaits.

Youth Ventures
Our instructors are committed to bringing younger teens into the wilderness and exposing them to the beauty, freedom and adventure of Outward Bound. From portaging canoes to taking care of your teammates, from building a fire to building character, the Boundary Waters is a perfect place to get out on your own and practice independence and leadership. Youth Ventures courses are typically more structured and focused on student success, self-confidence and teamwork. Students are expected to try their best, and exercise compassion, craftsmanship and tenacity and to have fun.

The Outward Bound Difference
This course builds skills as an individual while backpacking, as a team of two as you master canoeing and in teamwork in general as your whole group carries canoes and gear from one lake to the other. Throughout the course there are evening discussions to review personal and group challenges encountered during the day. Topics include leadership, independent decision-making, responsibility and teamwork. At other times during the course you have the opportunities to learn geology, environmental ethics and natural history. Successful completion of your course demands mastery of skills, trust, fitness, confidence, tenacity, leadership, initiative and compassion. The promotion of these qualities, and the discovery of what is in you, is the purpose of Outward Bound.

This course may be the hardest thing you have ever done. Outward Bound philosophy maintains that by facing the challenges the course will offer you, you will emerge physically and mentally stronger, with an increased mastery of expedition skills as well as a better understanding of your own capabilities. We think that the payoff is well worth the work, but you should be aware of what you’re getting into and excited about tackling the challenges.

Course Description
Two different modes of travel mean two different teamwork strategies, two different skill sets and two different opportunities for a new sense of accomplishment. Travel the Boundary Waters by canoe and hike the Sawtooth Range along Lake Superior's north shore. Climbing the forty to eighty foot sheer rock walls will test your limits and expand your capabilities. Pitch your tent in a new spot every day, and little by little take over the leadership of the expedition as you and your group gain the skills needed to run your own show. By course end, if your group is ready, your instructors will hand over the reins, becoming silent group members ready to intervene if needed.  The instructors will let you take over and get yourselves to camp, get your fire built, your dinner cooked and be in charge of yourselves.

NOTE: Virtually all airlines, except United and Southwest, REQUIRE that travelers, age 14 or younger, flying without a companion over the age of 18 pay for their Unaccompanied Minor service. This fee ranges anywhere from $40 to $75 each way. In most cases, the Unaccompanied Minor service is OPTIONAL for travelers between the ages of 15-17.
