This 16-day multi-element course takes place in Utah and is perfect for individuals ready for a classic river trip and the adventure and challenge of canyoneering.

Course Area

This course has varied locations. You may paddle 50 miles of flat water on the Colorado River, descend the 28 exciting rapids that rate with those of the Grand Canyon and head up one of the many majestic side canyons of lower Cataract Canyon for your canyoneering section. Or you might paddle the Green River through Desolation Canyon, passing spectacular rock formations and ancient Indian ruins, and the earthy bluffs of Gray Canyon. Next you will transfer to the San Rafael Swell, an area of massive buttes, slot-like canyons and soaring pinnacles for the canyoneering section.

Course Description

You and your companions will become a team, maneuvering your raft through Class II – III rapids. Between the rapids are flat-water sections where there is a current, but no whitewater which will build your muscles and your skill. Stop along the way to explore side trails, canyons, and historic or geologic points of interest. These hikes will take you through rough terrain to incredible, remote places that are only accessible by river travelers. Then journey through the beautiful and challenging canyon country. Canyoneering involves travel in canyons that are often narrow and steep with many obstacles to negotiate. Traveling through them requires a combination of scrambling up and down-climbing over boulders, rappelling, lowering packs, and walking with your pack on. This rugged, rocky terrain requires teamwork and effective decision-making. To meet the demands of technical terrain you encounter, instructors will begin by teaching the foundational skills, such as basic movement over rock, necessary for efficient travel.
