Scholarship Policies
Please review the policies below and read the Frequently Asked Questions prior to applying for scholarship assistance.

Scholarship Timeline

  1. Each scholarship applicant will receive an electronic copy of the Scholarship Application (along with course information, medical paperwork, etc.) within 48 hours of enrolling on an Outward Bound course. All paperwork is due back to Outward Bound within two weeks of receiving it. Failure to adhere to paperwork deadlines will result in a forfeiture of your spot on course (and the loss of the $100 application fee)..

  2. Upon receipt of your scholarship application, the Outward Bound Scholarship Committee will review the application to assess financial need. This process can take up to a week but typically only requires 2-3 business days. After your application is reviewed, we will email you (to the email address on file) a Scholarship Award Agreement notifying you of your scholarship award amount. If you are not eligible for scholarship assistance, we will send you a separate notification and request that you indicate if you are still interested in attending Outward Bound..

  3. A response to your initial scholarship notification is required within 3 business days in one of the two formats below:.

    • Scholarship Award Agreement - Required for applicants that do qualify for financial assistance. This Agreement serves as a venue for the applicant to formally accept or decline their award.

    • Scholarship Notification - Required for applicants that do not qualify for financial assistance. This form serves as a venue for the applicant to either cancel and be refunded the $100 application fee or to indicate their interest in remaining on course.

  4. If you fail to respond to the scholarship notification within 3 days, your $100 application fee becomes non-refundable and we will release your spot on course to other applicants..

  5. If you accept your award or choose to remain on course, payment is due along with the Award Agreement or Notification Form. If your course begins in more then 60 days, you are responsible for paying the minimum $400 tuition deposit. If your course begins in less than 60 days, the balance of your tuition is due. In the case that you decide to remain on course (and submit the appropriate documentation), your $100 application fee becomes non-refundable..

Additional Policies

Eligibility - We do not offer scholarships on the Maine to Bermuda Schooner Courses, Maine to Nova Scotia Schooner Sailing, or the University of Chicago Courses. Some courses and course areas have less available funding so scholarship amounts may be smaller on these courses.

Cancellations - Upon responding to your scholarship notification, all Outward Bound Cancellation, Transfer and Early Departure Policies apply.

Balance Payments - All tuition payments/balances are due 60 days before your course start date.

Course Transfers - Scholarships are non-transferable because of variations in course tuition or other restrictions. If you transfer courses, we will re-review your Scholarship Application and email you a new Scholarship Agreement, if necessary. Your award amount may not be the same.

Sponsor Letters- Every scholarship student is required to write a thoughtful letter to the donor of their scholarship expressing thanks for the opportunity to attend. Your instructors will set aside time at course end to complete the letter. If we do not receive a letter from the basecamp at the completion of course, the Scholarship Program may contact you post course to write a thank you letter.
