Two key Omaha based studies uncovered ways that an Outward Bound Omaha urban center presence could make a direct impact on youth in need. Challenges identified in the Stanford Research Institute (SRI) study in 2007 and the University of Nebraska at Omaha Afterschool Needs Assessment also in 2007 include: lack of programs supporting middle school to high school transition, youth becoming 'disconnected' from the systems in place to support them, the impact of poverty on a student's ability to gain the 'assets' needed to survive and thrive in pursuit of becoming healthy, well educated members of the community.
A Northeast Omaha location for an Outward Bound urban center would place the program facility and services in close proximity to a critical community of need; bringing unique Outward Bound pedagogies to Omaha at a critical point when so many existing organizations and programs seek to create a brighter future for Omaha's youth. The value which an Outward Bound Omaha urban center will add to existing programs can be significant and the prospect of re-connecting with lost youth, greatly enhanced.
The Center is currently in the planning stages and is projected to begin running pilot courses in the Spring of 2010.
Customized programming
Outward Bound Omaha was born out of the Outward Bound Omaha Needs & Opportunities Assessment completed in August 2009. The core programs for an Outward Bound in Omaha start-up are the pilot programs with area schools, youth serving agencies, and workforce development efforts. One day urban programs, 2-3 day regional wilderness programs, along with more traditional wilderness trips for Omaha youth and adults are envisioned. The full assessment can be found here.
Core programs addressing the needs of youth ages 14-17 years old youth; especially youth transitioning from 8th to 9th grade, will be at the heart of the programmatic focus in 2010 and 2011.
