Outward Bound courses create leaders through educational programs in the wilderness. Our Scholarship program is guided by a single principle: Every person should be given the opportunity to experience adventure and challenge, develop character and compassion, and learn leadership skills and service ethics, regardless of financial ability.
Thanks to generous donations from alumni, parents, corporations, foundations and others, Outward Bound’s network of regional schools provides scholarships to thousands of students each year.
Scholarships are based on a combination of need and student motivation, and are offered on a first-come, first-served basis by the Outward Bound Regional School where your course is offered.
Outward Bound Regional Schools offer scholarships on a rolling basis (applying early will increase your chances of getting a scholarship). Regional Schools have limited scholarship funds and the amount varies from year to year, so please contact the National Admissions Office to inquire if funds are currently available. To find out more, you may also contact a Regional School directly.
Scholarships are for tuition only, and do not cover transportation to/from the course start location, or personal expenses such as clothing, insurance, airfare, and baggage fees.
To apply for a scholarship, you must first submit an application for a specific expedition. Proceed with the following steps:
Submit an application. Outward Bound requires that a $500 deposit, which includes a $150 non-refundable application fee, be submitted with the application.
On the application, be sure to answer “Yes” to the question asking if you are interested in applying for a scholarship.
Within three business days of submitting your application, you can expect to receive an email for additional enrollment materials, including a scholarship application, from the Outward Bound School where your course is offered.
Complete all enrollment materials by their deadlines.* Timely completion of paperwork will assist the Outward Bound School with determining the scholarship amount they are able to offer you.
The Outward Bound School will review all enrollment materials and notify you of your scholarship amount. Our standard Deposit Refund Policy will be followed for all cases unless the scholarship amount is not enough to meet your needs, in which case you can decline the offer by the deadline you’ve been given and receive your entire $500 deposit back. The $150 non-refundable application fee will not be refunded if you are unresponsive to your Course Advisor or if you cancel your application for any reason other than the award amount not meeting your needs.
*Please Note: When applying for an Outward Bound expedition, all applicants are required to submit a thorough health history as well as responses to short answer questions. Often, these enrollment materials are due at the same time as or before your scholarship application. Students will often be asked to complete the application process before a scholarship application is reviewed.
