Alex Wetherbee Scholarship
An endowment fund has been established by Alex’ relatives and will fully fund one student on a 14 day course. This fund and student selection will be administered in conjunction with the Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors and allow us to provide scholarship opportunities for young survivors of military servicemen/women killed in action.” Alex Wetherbee was a former instructor at the Colorado Outward Bound School, and a passionate outdoor educator that will be missed by the entire Outward Bound community.

Alex Wetherbee, a former instructor at the Colorado Outward Bound
School, was killed in the line of duty on September 12 while serving
near Fallujah in Iraq.
Alex was born in Fairfax County, Virginia. He traveled and lived abroad in India, Pakistan, Norway, and Ethiopia with his family through the Foreign Service. He graduated from the University of Idaho with a degree in forest resources in 2001. During his college years, Alex was an avid outdoorsman. He also met his future wife Heather there. They shared adventures mountaineering, backpacking, rock and ice climbing, and kayaking. Alex trained as a Marine Corps recruit in San Diego while in college and excelled. He was then commissioned through the Naval Reserve Officer Training Program.
Following graduation, Alex was hired as an Instructor at the Colorado Outward Bound School. He led mountaineering courses out of Marble and Leadville spanning two seasons. Alex was a passionate outdoor educator and had intended to return to Outward Bound upon completing his duty with the Marine Corps.
Alex received numerous military awards and gave exceptional service to his country. He also left a powerful impression on those who knew him at Outward Bound as a man of humility, integrity, kindness, and grit.
Alex is survived by his wife Heather, a current Outward Bound West instructor in the Pacific Region; his parents Doris and Harry Wetherbee; his brother Donald; and two grandparents. We are incredibly sad to lose Alex and send our deepest condolences to his family. He will be remembered at Outward Bound by all those who knew and admired him.
Alex Wetherbee Outward Bound Scholarship will be awarded to a deserving student prior to May of 2007.
