Long associated with privilege, procrastination and blissful wanderlust, the Gap Year experience is earning a brand new image in the United States. In a society laser-focused on career paths, worker productivity and bottom lines, it can be tough to wrap our heads around the idea of sending an 18-25 year-old on an unsupervised pre-college journey – and hoping for the best. Yes, we could cross our fingers that they’ll get something significant out of the experience, and return ready to hit the books, but wouldn’t it be more efficient – and more direct – to go straight to college and into the workforce?
Perhaps. But probably not.

College counselors often discuss the possibility – and importance – of a Gap Year with students before they even apply for schools. The numbers are growing – not because students want to put off college or delay responsibility – but because parents, students, admissions officials and teachers are seeing consistent, significant benefits associated with Gap Year experiences.

What is a Gap Year, exactly?
The American Gap Association defines a Gap Year as “a structured period of time when students take a break from formal education to increase self-awareness, learn from different cultures, and experiment with possible careers.” Lasting two months up to two years, Gap Years are often taken between high school graduation and the junior year of college – but they might also be taken between careers – or in other contexts altogether.
