About This Course

Activity

  • The image shows a simple, stylized drawing of a canoe in blue against a black background. The canoe is depicted with curved lines outlining its shape, and there are horizontal lines inside the canoe to suggest its structure or design. The style is reminiscent of a basic illustration or icon, with a focus on clear, recognizable shapes rather than detailed realism. Canoeing
  • The image shows a stylized, blue drawing of a foot and ankle, possibly representing a ballet dancer's foot in a pointe shoe. The foot is positioned vertically, with the toes pointing downwards. The drawing has a simple, almost cartoonish style, with thick lines outlining the shape of the foot and shoe. The background is black, which makes the blue drawing stand out. The image could be used to represent dance, movement, or elegance. Rock Climbing
  • The image shows a blue rope against a black background. The rope is coiled and appears to be somewhat thick. The blue color of the rope stands out against the dark backdrop, making it the focal point of the image. The rope's texture and the way it's coiled add visual interest to the otherwise simple composition. Ropes Course
  • The image shows a stylized, blue-outlined graphic against a black background. Two hands are cupped together, as if holding or presenting something delicate. Above the hands, there are three leaf-like shapes, suggesting a plant or nature. The overall impression is one of care, growth, or environmental stewardship. The simplicity of the design and the use of a single color give it a clean and modern look. Service Projects

Setting & Location

  • The image shows a simple, hand-drawn style illustration of three evergreen trees, possibly pine or fir trees. They are depicted in a solid blue color against a white background. The trees are stylized with jagged edges to represent the needles and branches, giving them a whimsical and slightly abstract appearance. The trunks are simple vertical lines. Forest
  • The image shows a blue silhouette of a landscape against a black background. The landscape includes trees, mountains, and water, possibly a lake or river. The style is simple and graphic, resembling a logo or emblem. The scene evokes a sense of nature and tranquility, with the dark background emphasizing the blue elements of the natural landscape. Lake

What You'll Do

Highly trained and caring instructors facilitate a peer self-discovery expedition focusing on teamwork, decision-making, communication, and healthy risk-taking. While teens practice balancing freedom with responsibility in the wilderness, back at home, families build their skills for change.

CB27 Pull Quotes

When I get home, I can tell people that Outward Bound reminded me about who I really am and want to be. It kick-started the change into being a better person.

Marisa

Voyageur Outward Bound School Intercept

I liked that the principles of Outward Bound were extended to serve a particular segment of families that have distinct needs. I really like the addition of the family seminar as a means to give families tools and to provide families with support for each other. The relationships with staff were very professional, yet warm.

Brenda

Parent of Voyageur Outward Bound School Intercept

Before this course, I was locked in my comfort zone and was unwilling to try new things. Now, after, I feel like I have changed. Outward Bound has helped me so much with developing better social skills and making new friends. It has helped me know how to be more efficient and get work done quickly. It has helped me escape my comfort zone and try new things. Most of all, Outward Bound has challenged me in so many ways that it has helped me find myself and discover what l am capable of.

CB17 FAQs

FAQs

What is Intercept, in simple terms?

+ -

Intercept is an Outward Bound course for teens and young adults that combines a challenging outdoor expedition with intentional family involvement. It helps families step out of unproductive patterns and build tools for healthier communication and decision-making together.

Who is Intercept designed for?

+ -

Intercept is designed for families that feel stuck and know something needs to change, but who are not seeking or do not need clinical treatment. It is a good fit for families who are open to challenge, reflection, and a shared effort and who are willing to engage in the process together.

What role do parents or caregivers play?

+ -

Caregivers play an active role in Intercept. Near the end of the expedition, families join their child and instructors for a multi-day workshop focused on reflection, communication, and planning for life after the course.

How do we know if Intercept is the right fit for our family?

+ -

Choosing Intercept is not about urgency; it is about readiness. Families can take a short quiz to explore whether Intercept aligns with their needs or speak with a Customer Success Specialist to talk through questions and options.

How is Intercept different from therapy or wilderness therapy?

+ -

Intercept is not therapy, treatment, or wilderness therapy. There are no diagnoses, clinical assessments, medical services, or clinicians involved.

Intercept is an experiential Outward Bound course focused on building social, emotional, and physical skills through challenge, experience, and reflection. Rather than treating mental health conditions, Intercept is future focused, helping young people and families build confidence, capability, and momentum for what comes next.

Where does the course start and end?

+ -

The course begins and ends in Duluth, Minnesota. Students meet at the Duluth airport, where Outward Bound staff greet the group and provide transportation to the course start location. Near the end of the course, families return to the Duluth area to participate in the in‑person Family Seminar.

Do parents or caregivers need to travel with their child to drop them off at Course Start?

+ -

Parents are welcome to accompany their child, but it is not required. Many students travel independently, and staff meet the group once everyone arrives.

Can my child travel as an unaccompanied minor?

+ -

Yes. Many Intercept students travel independently to the course start location. Families may choose to use an airline’s unaccompanied minor service, but it is not required by Outward Bound.

Who can families contact with travel questions before enrolling?

+ -

Families are encouraged to speak with a Customer Success Specialist to talk through travel logistics, timing, and any specific concerns before making a decision.
