Are you ready to take a journey that will change your life? You won’t look at day-to-day drama the same way after you’ve conquered a high mountain ridge, made a boat obey your command in windswept waves or slept under the stars watching bats swoop overhead. Joining an Outward Bound expedition changes you. Your crew, your Instructors, your route and your adventures will have a profound and lasting impact on you as you rise to meet exhilarating natural challenges in some of the country’s wildest places.
After you come home, many of the character, leadership and service traits you uncovered on your expedition stay with you, helping you navigate your daily life with more resilience and success.
This course provides an introduction to the art and craft of backpacking. Instructors will teach the crew how to cook, set up tarp shelters and navigate on-trail. Activities and lessons are focused on teamwork, communication and self-discovery. As each student is capable of more than they know, this course will help them realize their own potential and return to their day to day lives with increased confidence and self-awareness. In addition to technical skills, instructors will teach and facilitate the interpersonal skills needed for students to work together to accomplish goals and tackle new challenges.
Far removed from starry nights and wilderness waterfalls, San Francisco is a bustling city of winding streets and bay views. It’s a beautiful and diverse city that attract travelers from across the globe. With this as their classroom, students will gain knowledge and appreciation for different cultures, types of food, and the economic and social issues cities face across the US.
Service to others and to the environment is a core value of Outward Bound and is integrated into each course. Groups follow Leave No Trace ethics as part of their service to the environment and engage in acts of service while leading and supporting fellow students. Seeing the impact of their actions firsthand, students develop an ingrained appreciation of service and transfer this desire to serve their communities back home.
On every Outward Bound course, reflection is an integral part of the learning process. During solo, participants will take a break from the rigors of daily travel and rest and reflect on the course. Though students are in solitude, the solo sites are near the group’s base camp and instructors. The maximum solo length on this course is 6 hours and will not be overnight.
Outward Bound courses vary in length from 4 to 85 days. On shorter courses, students receive an introduction to leadership skills, strength of character and a desire to serve, while activities fill most of the time and the pace is quick. With longer courses, the same outcomes and benefits are achieved with the opportunity to reach a more profound level of mastery as there are more chances to develop technical skills, receive and implement feedback and further personal development. However many days the expedition lasts, the strength and impact of the experience lasts a lifetime.
Santa Cruz Mountain Range
Daily morning fog envelopes the Santa Cruz Mountain range, where the redwoods can reach as high as the Statue of Liberty. On the forest floor and alongside bridges, bright green moss nestles alongside waterfalls and bright yellow banana slugs.
San Francisco, CA
Sitting on seven hills, San Francisco is a gorgeous and charming city. The steep city streets provide spectacular city and ocean views. For its world renown, it’s actually fairly small, fewer than a million residents pack into a compact seven squared miles of vibrant neighborhoods. Weather in San Francisco can change on a whim – it can be windy, sunny, overcast and chilly all within an hour!
