No two Outward Bound expeditions are ever quite the same. Every crew is unique; every route is distinct; and every adventure is dynamic. But one thing remains the same. On each course, students rise to meet exhilarating natural challenges in some of the country’s wildest places – and find strength and determination along the way.
Students learn how to paddle their boats in a variety of conditions, set up camp, cook camp meals, navigate with a map and compass and roll and wet-exit from their kayaks. As students overcome numerous expedition challenges, they also develop a greater belief in themselves and trust in one another. Successful completion of this course requires more than the mastery of technical skills; teamwork proves to be as important as everything else combined.
The Chesapeake Bay is the largest estuary in the nation - the meeting point where 400 rivers, creeks, and streams spanning from NY to VA all travel to the Atlantic Ocean. It boasts 4,600 miles of tidal shoreline perfect for kayaking. Settled by the Powhatan Indians and first explored by Captain John Smith in the 1600s, history and nature intersect in the Chesapeake Bay to create a place with endless potential for discovery.
