Since its creation in 1986, the Baltimore Outward Bound School has led thousands of students into the wild ‘Dolly Sods’ of West Virginia and the Appalachian Trail, through the streets of Baltimore on urban expeditions and on the waters of Chesapeake Bay to experience education in a non-traditional setting.
The philosophy and experiential framework of Outward Bound’s founder Kurt Hahn has shaped the courses and programs offered at the Baltimore Outward Bound School. By living as a group in a wilderness setting and facing authentic challenges, participants realize what they are truly capable of and develop compassionate, capable leadership skills needed for actively engaging in their lives back home.
Outward Bound students are not passengers on a journey. They are the crew and return from their experience mentally stronger with enhanced compassion and more confidence to embrace personal growth.
There are thrills. But it’s not just about the thrills. An Outward Bound course is so much more than a one-dimensional adventure experience. A zip line is not a life-changing experience-—a program designed by some of the world’s greatest outdoor educators is.
Students learn skills that help them redefine their future and their role in the world. Compassion, integrity, confidence and critical thinking cannot be learned in the classroom only. These life skills are earned through experience—experience that Outward Bound provides.
