The Smith Rock Climbing and Yoga course for Women is set in one of the Northwest's most awe-inspiring spaces – Smith Rock State Park, Central Oregon. Here you will have the opportunity to escape your usual routine, explore stunning wilderness areas, and enjoy yourself to the fullest. You might bring a friend you enjoy spending time with to make the trip even more memorable. After learning climbing techniques including gear use, belaying, rappelling, safety and etiquette, you will put your learning into practice amidst the grandeur of this towering geologic formation. You'll have the unique opportunity to practice yoga while gazing at the legendary "Monkey Face" formation, the brilliance of the Crooked River, and the glowing vista of red rocks. Wilderness travel can be challenging, but with appropriate pre-course preparation – using tools we provide – adults of various ages and body types can be successful. You do not need to have any previous experience but arriving as physically fit as possible and excited for the opportunity for personal development will enhance your experience and allow you to take full advantage of the expedition. You will also build your confidence to take on challenges in the enriching and empowering environment of a single-gender course

Students will receive individual instruction and test their skills against the vertical cracks, steep faces and boulders of Smith Rock State Park. Among the skills students will learn are: basic climbing equipment, rope management, wearing harnesses, tying knots, belaying and rappelling techniques, and movement on rock.

A daily yoga practice of movement, breath and connection to the body complements the more dynamic sport of rock climbing. Students will have the opportunity to cultivate their own yoga practice through daily class while on course. The course will begin with a basic introduction to the practice of yoga and will encourage the development of a life-long routine students can take home with them.
Service to others and the environment is a core value of Outward Bound and is integrated into each course. While in the wilderness, students are encouraged to practice service to the environment and their team by sharing responsibilities and following Leave No Trace ethics throughout the expedition.
In order for profound learning to take place, there must be time to reflect on the experience. Solo is the opportunity to experience solitude in the wilderness without distraction while also taking a break from the physical rigors of the course. During this course, students will participate in a mini-Solo, an opportunity to spend a few hours during a specific day to sit in solitude to reflect on their experience.
Courses typically end with a Challenge Event—an individual final physical push. This may take the form of an endurance run or triathlon-style challenge.
Outward Bound promotes character development, leadership, and service in the most engaging classroom possible … the wilderness. In real time, students experience the effects of their decisions on themselves and the other members of their group as they work to complete difficult tasks necessary for wilderness travel. Instructors challenge students to try new things and step outside their comfort zones. They also provide feedback that students implement on course and when they return to their communities. Adult courses offer a unique opportunity to disconnect from everyday life and reconnect with one’s self and others. Regardless of age or life stage, Outward Bound believes that everyone can benefit from opportunities to experience challenge, adventure, and to work within a supportive environment to gain a greater sense of self.

Smith Rock State Park, Oregon
Smith Rock State Park is a world-renowned climbing destination that attracts climbers of every ability level. The Crooked River winds its way through the canyon, and to the west, the snow-capped volcanoes of the Cascade Range rise on the horizon. Eagles nest in the rocks and the area is abundant with incredible wildlife. One of the most striking features is a prominent spire, Monkey Face. Given the dry and temperate climate, rock climbing is feasible most of the year.
Course Start, welcome and introductions, gear check, course overview, intro to climbing gear and movement on rock
Rock Climbing: introduction to rock climbing systems, belaying, top roping and lowering. Development of group culture and personal goals
Rock Climbing: development of climbing technique. Experience various types of rock climbs and difficulties. Continue to work on belaying and supporting other climbers
Personal Challenge Event, de-issue gear, debrief, course end celebration and graduation
